What a Move to Natick Has to Offer
Located in Middlesex County, Natick was established by a missionary named John Eliot as a Puritan settlement for American Indians. In 1775, both Native Americans and Englishmen participated in the Revolutionary War battles of Lexington and Bunker Hill, and their names are memorialized on a stone marker on Pond Street near downtown Natick.
Henry Wilson, a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts and later the 18th Vice President of the United States, lived in Natick and served as a shoemaker and schoolteacher there. His nickname was the "Natick Cobbler." Today, a middle school is named after him, and his original 10-foot-by-10-foot shop at 181 West Central Street, along the route of the Boston Marathon, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Initially Natick was a farming community, but after the invention of the sewing machine, a number of shoe factories were established; as many as 23 factories made Natick the third-largest shoe-producing municipality in the nation, with business peaking about 1880. At the same time, the first plant in the world to make baseballs was also established in Natick.
Today, Natick is home to the U.S. Army Labs, the highly regarded Walnut Hill preparatory school, and the headquarters of Boston Scientific, Cognex, and Mathworks corporations. The downtown features a number of historic buildings, one of which is Eliot Church, originally founded in 1651. A sign erected on the anniversary of the 300th founding of Massachusetts as a colony commemorates John Eliot's mission there.
Famous people from Natick include singer Jonathan Richman, baseball players Peter Smith and Walt Hriniak, football players Joe McGlone, Darren Flutie, and Doug Flutie, and authors Harold Kushner, Horatio Alger, Jr., and Harriet Beecher Stowe, whose novel "Old Town Folks" was written during her years in Natick.
