What a Move to Amesbury Has to Offer
Along with neighboring Salisbury, Amesbury is one of the two most northern municipalities in Essex County, Massachusetts. Located on the Merrimack River, Amesbury is across from the communities of Newburyport and West Newbury. Formerly known as a farming and mill town, the town today is a residential community ideal for couples and those with small children.
Amesbury was a part of Salisbury until 1667, when settlers who wished to be in the separate congregation of the new community then called New Town petitioned the colonial government to create a new township, which was then renamed Amesbury, after the proximal towns in England of Salisbury and Amesbury. From farming, its original industry, the town turned to shipbuilding and fishing, and Amesbury became a formidable maritime and industrial center. Textile mills and America's first nail factory were built. The most productive hat making company in the nation, the Merrimac Hat Company, was located there, as was a carriage and coach-building business, which later turned to the manufacture of automobile bodies. Famous people from Amesbury include poet Robert Frost, William Paine of brokerage house Paine Webber, and Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science.
Amesbury is the location of Amesbury Sports Park, a multi-sports facility located on a hill where residents enjoy skiing and snow tubing in the winter. Residents compete in other sports including rugby, soccer and obstacle races, and the park is the site of the Warrior Dash, the Spartan Race and the Run for Your Lives races. Live concerts are typically hosted, as is Amesbury’s annual Brew Fest.
The proximity of Interstates 95 and 495, as well as bridges to Newburyport and the city's connection to New Hampshire give Amesbury convenient access to shopping, recreation and sporting sites. Boating and fishing, even in the winter, is common on Lake Attitash, and this body of water is known as one of the best sources of northern pike in the region.
