What a Move to Summerville Has to Offer
Summerville is a town in South Carolina that is located primarily in Dorchester County but also extends into both Berkeley County and Charleston County. It is approximately 25.5 miles from Charleston. The town motto is “Sacra Pinus Esto,” which means, “The Pine is Sacred.” According to the latest census data, Summerville has a population of 46,074 and a land area in square miles of 18.05. Summerville serves as a suburb of Charleston and grows in relation to the success of that city.
The settlement that would become Summerville was established during the American Revolutionary War, and the area has an amazing historical tradition. This tradition includes five sites in the immediate area that are on the National Register of Historic Places, including Ashley River Road and the Summerville Historic District. There are more than a dozen significant museums in the area as well, such as Fort Sumter, the Gibbes Museum of Art and the South Carolina Aquarium.
In 1973, the town hosted the first Flowertown Festival in attempt to drive tourism into the area. That festival became an annual event, and it continues every year in Azalea Park during the first weekend of April. The Flowertown Players, which were named for the festival, are the area’s only ongoing community theatre group. Performances take place at the historic James F. Dean Theatre, and in the last decade or so, that theater has become a significant location for Off-Broadway productions.
