About 36 miles south of Pittsburgh along the Monongahela River is the borough of California in Washington County. Not to be confused with the state, the town of California, Pennsylvania, was founded in 1849 and named for the territory after the Gold Rush.
The borough is made up of two communities, which happened when the California Borough and East Pike Run Township merged in 1953. Today, California is home to California University of Pennsylvania, which creates plenty of educational, employment and recreational opportunities.
According to a 2012 U.S. Census estimate, there were 6,816 residents living in California, and that number is growing as it becomes a more popular place to call home. Since 2000, the number of people living here has increased 29.2 percent.
