The county seat of Ellis County in Kansas, Hays is the largest city in the northwestern part of the state. The city draws its name from Brigadier General Alexander Hays, a famous military man from 1865 who helped found the city in 1867. The history of Hays is filled with city-wide disasters that helped shape it into the tough, resilient city it is today. In 1895, a fire broke out that was large enough to destroy 60 buildings. Severe flooding occurred in both 1907 and 1951. In 1935, the city experienced the violent dust storms characteristic of the Dust Bowl. However, recent years have seen only growth.

Hays features a combination of three different climate types throughout the year that can bring weather patterns that include tornadoes, especially in the warmer months. However, adverse weather patterns have done nothing to hamper the growth and diversity of the city, especially when it comes to things to do.
