What a Move to Groton Has to Offer
The town of Groton, Connecticut, is situated about halfway between New York and Boston. Groton is the largest municipality between New Haven, Connecticut, and the metropolitan Providence, Rhode Island, area. Nestled between the Thames and Mystic rivers, Groton is known for its scenic shores bordering Long Island Sound, east of the end of Long Island. State and Municipal parks offer plenty of access to beaches and beautiful views of the water.
The first historical accounts of Groton date back to 1614 when Dutch explorer Adrian Block mapped the coast. At the time, Groton was a fortified bastion of the Pequot Indians, the most prolific Native American tribe at the time.
Groton was initially inhabited by Europeans as a component of New London. However, by the year 1705 the amount of people living east of the river had risen enough that the General Court allowed the residents to form a separate town, which they dubbed Groton, attributed to the Winthrop estate located in England.
Today, Groton is a hub for industrial and commercial activity. The town's shoreline location along with its historical points of interest has attracted tourists from across the country. Groton contains the headquarters for the Electric Boat Corporation, known as a major supplier of submarine services for the United States Navy. The Naval Submarine Base of New London is situated in Groton, and Pfizer has a significant presence as a major employer. A regional campus of the University of Connecticut is located in the Avery Point area of Groton.
The 2000 census reveals that there were 39,907 people, 15,473 households, and 9,980 families registered as residents in the town of Groton.
