Vallejo, situated on the northeastern shore of San Pablo Bay, is a coastal town most famous for being the home to the first naval ship facility on the West Coast as well as the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom theme park. It was the first permanent location of state capital, although the state capitol burned to the ground in the 1880s. Vallejo is the largest city in Solano County and the 10th most populous city in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a population of about 118,000, as of the 2013 U.S. Census. The city is named after General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, one of the pioneering members of the region.
For decades, Vallejo’s waterfront location has made it an important harbor for both military and commercial shipping, industry and ferry transportation. Though not as common as the used to be, four high-speed catamaran ferries carry thousands of passengers a week to and from San Francisco for work and play.
In true San Fran Bay area-fashion, Vallejo welcomes a moderate climate throughout the seasons. During the winter, temperatures hardly drop below 40 degrees Fahrenheit and during the summer, highs escalate to the 90s.
