The city of Lompoc, California, was established as Mission La Purisima Concepcion in 1787 before an earthquake destroyed it in 1812. More than 43,000 people live in Lompoc, and the city grew at a slow rate until the U.S. Air Force announced that the former Camp Cooke would become a test site for the Thor ballistic missile, leading to a population boom. More people then moved there with the opening of the Vandenberg Air Force Base, the first missile base in the country.
The weather in Lompoc is typical of coastal California with temperatures averaging around 68 degrees Fahrenheit. The Mediterranean climate means the sun is almost always shining and accompanied by a cool ocean breeze. Those looking to escape harsh winters will find the lack of snowfall pleasing.
