What a Move to Show Low Has to Offer

The city of Show Low got its start in an unusual way. Its unique name came from a very long poker game played between Corydon E. Cooley and Marion Clark. These two men believed that there was not enough room in the area for both, so they agreed that the loser of the poker game would leave. The stakes? A 100,000-acre ranch. Clark reportedly told Cooley, "If you can show low, you win." The story goes that Cooley produced the deuce of clubs, replying, "Show low it is." Now, Show Low's primary street is named "Deuce of Clubs" in remembrance of the winning hand.
The city's ideal location along the Mogollon Rim, a prime outdoor recreation area, makes it a popular tourist destination. It's also a vacation spot frequented by celebrities, including Texas Ranger George Mathis, golfer Mike Furyk, and actor George Takei of “Star Trek” fame, who owns a vacation home here.
