How to Prepare your Home for Moving

packed up house

Don’t let all of the moving tasks pile up and cause stress as your moving date approaches.

By preparing your home in advance, you can set aside just a few hours every week in the time leading up to your move, so that when the big day comes around, everything’s ready to go. If you’re using a moving company like Allied Malaysia, this means that movers will be able to get to work quicker. If you choose to tackle the move yourself, on the other hand, having everything prepared means that you’ll be more organised and ready for a smooth moving day.

Here are some of our movers’ best tips on how to prepare for a move, and what to do before movers come!

Get started early

Depending on the size of your home and how much you have to move, it can take multiple weeks to get through it all. On average, we suggest beginning to prepare your home for movers around six weeks in advance. This should give you enough time to get through each room, and also means that you have time to spare in case something unexpected happens, or a task takes longer than you had initially planned for.

Six weeks before your move is also a good time to start finding the right moving services for you.

Break it down

It’s easy to get overwhelmed when moving - there is a lot to plan and think about, and it can be a stressful time of uncertainty. Something you can do to make it more manageable is break each task down into smaller parts. When it comes to preparing your home for movers, start with one room.

Then when that room is done, move on to the next, and before you know it, you’ll be well on your way to being ready for moving day. You will also likely find that you get quicker as you progress through the rooms as you find a system that works well for you. It might be worth making a moving checklist to keep you on track, too.

Declutter and downsize

Moving house presents a great opportunity to declutter your home and get rid of anything you no longer need. You’d be surprised by how many things you own that you either forgot about or no longer need, and this is the perfect time to get rid of anything unwanted. Start by making three piles; sell, donate, or throw away, and add clothes, accessories, homeware, or whatever you come across to the appropriate pile. For anything that you sell, the money you make can be put towards paying for your move!

You might also come across items that you don’t want to get rid of, but don’t want to take with you just yet either. Identifying these early will give you time to find a storage facility where they can be kept safe until you’re ready to bring them to your new home.

Stay organised

This is something that can be hard to stick to, but staying organised throughout the preparation will help make the moving day go smoother. Ensuring that everything is packed appropriately takes longer than simply shoving things into boxes, and labelling boxes accurately can add a few minutes to the task, too.

When it comes to transporting your belongings and unloading them in your new home, however, this will save a lot of time, as you and your movers will know exactly where everything goes.

Pack strategically

Another time-saver when getting your home ready to move is packing strategically. We suggest you start by packing the rooms and belongings you use the least. This way, the items that you rely on day-to-day will be available to you for as long as possible. You should also make sure that boxes containing your most-used items are marked as such, so your movers know to unload them first at your destination.

It’s also a great idea to have an ‘essentials’ box or bag that you keep with you on moving day. This should have a spare change of clothes for each member of your household, battery packs for phones and devices, snacks, and toys and entertainment in case of delays.

Prepare large items

Along with packing up your belongings, you need to prepare furniture for moving, and larger appliances, too.

This means disassembling furniture, ensuring you keep all parts, screws, and tools safe and ready for reassembly in your new home, as well as tending to larger appliances.

During the final week in your old home, you should aim to use up any food in the fridge and freezer, and let it defrost a couple of days before your movers arrive.

If you’re taking a washing machine with you, then make sure all your laundry is done, and the machine can be easily removed.
