MOVING TO KUALA LUMPUR

Deciding on a move to KL? Here are our top considerations to keep in mind when moving to the country’s capital. Kuala Lumpur is one of the most exciting and busy cities to live in Malaysia. As a result of rapid industrialisation and high population, it does mean a more expensive lifestyle compared to other cities across the country. Whilst this won’t be a shock for international expats, this can take some adjusting to; especially for Malaysian’s moving from smaller cities.

In KL you’ll find a gastronomic hub of cuisines and cultures to dive into. With street food readily available around every corner and cuisines ranging from Malaysian, Chinese, Singaporean, Thai, Indian and Indonesian, you’ll never be short of options. When moving to Malaysia it is important to remember that the official religion is Islam. Therefore it’s important to read up on the local customs and make sure to dress and behave appropriately in public settings.

When it comes to planning out your move, there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, take note of the size of apartment or house you are moving into. Typically homes within the city centre can be quite small, whereas newly developed homes in the suburbs of KL are open planned and have more rooms. This will dictate how much of your current home you can move with, what you may prefer to leave in storage or what you may need to get rid of prior to your move. Once you have your moving date set, it’s then time to get in touch with a removalist. Our expert team will discuss the moving process with you, from what to do on the day, to how to accept your items at your final destination.

MOVING TO PENANG

If you’re looking for a city change without the expensive cost, but still the luxuries of a modern city look no further than Penang. Just like KL, you will find a rich tapestry of cultures, food, and history all in one place, and at a more affordable price.

Similar to KL, Penang has a diverse population of Chinese, Malay and Indian residents, with the majority of the population living in the UNESCO World Heritage site, George Town.

With an abundance of things to see and do you’ll be sure to find impressive monuments, buildings and temples around every corner. For example, Kek Lok Si-temple is a sprawling hillside structure and home to the largest Buddhist Temple in South-East Asia.

MOVING TO JOHOR BAHRU

As the second largest city in Malaysia, Johor Bahru is home to a thriving industrial, commercial and tourism hub. A city that is constantly growing and developing, Johor Bahru is home to the most theme parks in the country, ambitious property projects such as the ecologically sustainable ‘Forest City’, and affordable housing for residents.

Johor Bahru also offers great career opportunities, with residents commuting regularly to Singapore for work (due to a better exchange rate). Vice versa many inhabitants of Singapore go to Johor Bahru to shop affordable at one of the many shopping malls.

For Singaporeans Johor Bahru is actually a very cheap place to do shopping. Because of this many expats from Kuala Lumpur are currently relocating to Johor. This offers a great work life balance conveniently located, in a thriving and bustling city.

There are also a number of highly regarded international schools to choose from, making it an ideal choice for families. Due to its climate as well, the city is suitable for expats and retirees, with a large variety of fruit and vegetables grown locally and sold at markets to choose from - saving both your weekly grocery and eating out bills.

Moving from Penang to Kuala Lumpur

Whether it's for work, family or a lifestyle change in general, moving to KL from Penang is an exciting prospect no matter your motivation. Before getting started though, there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, what size is the home you are moving into? And is the move a good opportunity to downsize by selling or giving away some of your older or unwanted household items? Home sizes will also likely be smaller than what you can expect in Penang, so properly researching your new residence is a must.

Almost 400km apart and a 4-5 hour drive (depending on traffic), the move from Penang to Kuala Lumpur will likely take a whole day and that’s not including the packing and unpacking of your household items. If you’re looking to save money on moving costs it’s best to ensure all your items are packed into boxes before the removalists arrive and organise the move for a day and time when traffic is likely to be low (to minimise transit time). Remember, if you forget to bring something, it’s going to be a long drive to go back for it, so adequate pre-planning for your move is key!

Moving from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur

If you’ve decided to make the move from Johor Bahru to the capital there’s a couple things you will need to consider. While house and apartment sizes are similar across JB and KL, rental prices are higher in KL, meaning if you’re paying a similar price for your new home then it might be significantly smaller than where you’re living in Johor Bahru. It’s important to check the floorplan of your new place and calculate how much space your new home will have so that you can sell or store any extra furniture and possessions that might not fit in your new dwelling.

It’s also important to remember that Kuala Lumpur is 330km north-west of Johor Bahru and an almost 4 hour drive when traffic is flowing. This means that when planning your interstate move you must factor travel time into your moving costs and book your move for a date that ensures you have days free before and after the moving day to pack and unpack. Proper planning will ensure that you’re not forced to make multiple trips back and forth to collect any additional items you forgot to grab on the day of the move. It also means you’ll be less stressed and able to adjust to Kuala Lumpur more easily.
