Start early
The sooner you start getting your home ready for movers, the more time you will have to work through each task. We suggest beginning your preparation around six weeks before your scheduled moving day, taking just a few hours each week to prepare your home.
This is also a good time to contact moving companies in your area and get quotes for the service. The sooner you do this, the easier it will be to get everything scheduled.
Make a to-do list
Having a checklist or to-do list with dates is a great tool to keep you accountable in the lead up to your move. This can include tasks like cleaning, packing, buying moving supplies, dismantling or deconstructing furniture, and arranging when to tackle each room in your home.
Declutter
There’s no need to bring things to your new home that you don’t even use in your current place. To avoid your moving company packing and transporting belongings you don’t want, use moving as an opportunity to declutter your home. You can sell, donate, or throw out clothes, furniture, appliances, and anything else you don’t have a use for anymore. If there are some items that you want to keep but don’t have the space to take with you right now, then set those aside to be placed in storage until you decide on the best solution.
Pack strategically

This is to ensure that it can be easily recognised when it is loaded into the moving van. You should also include ‘fragile’ or ‘heavy’ labels to further assist your movers, and to ensure that your items are handled appropriately.
Take care of furniture
Many moving companies charge by the hour, so the less time they spend, the less you pay. There are some moving tasks that you can prepare for in advance to help limit the amount of time your movers will take. Dismantling furniture is one of these, and can be done ahead of time so your movers can simply come in and take them away with no extra hassle or time spent.

Appliances
Your refrigerator and freezer also need to be prepared for your move, whether you plan to take them with you or not. Start using up any food that’s left in them, aiming to have only essential items there for the last couple of days. Two days before you move, allow both to fully defrost so that when your moving company arrives, the appliances will be ready.
