From the CBD to sandy beaches, scenic hikes, and social events aplenty, life as a Sydney-sider is growing more and more attractive to Aussies all over the country. The bustling city is drawing in people from towns and cities across Australia, as well as the rest of the world. Whether you want to surf, hike, or stroll through Australia’s oldest street, Sydney has something for everyone.

When it’s time to head south and move to Sydney from the Gold Coast, at Allied, we are happy to lend a helping hand. You’ll have the support of both our Sydney interstate removalist team and our Gold Coast removalist team, ensuring your move is well handled from beginning to end.

Life in the Sydney

There’s nothing like that holiday feeling when you go somewhere new, but when that initial novelty wears off and real life kicks in, here’s some of what you can expect.

WORK & CAREER

Sydney is rich in employment opportunities, especially for those in the financial and professional services, as well as all things I.T.. Newcomers with experience in the health field, along with education and research should also be able to find work that’s right up their alley. It’s no surprise, too, seeing how quickly the city is growing - outwards as well as upwards - that the construction industry is another great one to be in.

For families moving together, Sydney has a number of highly-regarded public and private schools, as well as universities for anyone wanting to further their education in the Harbour City.

HOUSING

Something that’s important to bear in mind when moving from the Gold Coast to Sydney is the higher cost of living. Unfortunately, this is pretty prevalent in the housing market, whether you opt to rent or buy. While the median rental price for a three bedroom apartment in the Gold Coast CBD is around $3,600 per week, the Sydney equivalent comes in just shy of $5,000 per month. To buy outside of the city, you can expect to pay about $9,500 per square metre in Sydney, as opposed to $8,500 in the Gold Coast.

Sydney has more than 500 neighbourhoods, giving you plenty of choice in where to settle down. When it comes to where to live, Sydney is usually broken up into different areas, each with their own list of popular suburbs. Here are some of the most popular spots to live:

  • Inner West- Newton, Surrey Hills, Redfern, Marrickville

  • East- Bondi, Coogee, Paddington, Randwick

  • West & Southwest- Liverpool, Campbelltown, Harris Park, North Parramatta, Rosehill

If the Northern Beaches are more your thing, take a look at Manly.

Pro tip: If you want to blend in with the locals, be sure to make a clear differentiation between Manly and other parts of the city!

TRANSPORTATION

Sydney’s traffic is definitely something to think about when moving from the Gold Coast. The city’s roads can get quite congested, but it has good public transport links. Buses, trains, metro, and tram services are all relatively quick and convenient. These can be paid for either through contactless payment on your phone or card, or through an Opal card, which can be bought from a lot of newsagents and convenience stores. If you do choose to drive whilst here, you’ll have three months to drive on your Queensland licence before needing to apply for a New South Wales one.

CLIMATE

Sydney has an overall milder climate than Gold Coast. While saying goodbye to toasty temperatures year-round might be tough, the lower annual rainfall is something you can welcome with open arms, not umbrellas.

In Sydney, the average mid-summer temperature sits at 26°C, with highs of 17°C in winter, versus Gold Coast’s 29°C summers and 21°C winters.

THE CULTURE & LIFESTYLE

The heritage, lifestyle, and culture of Sydney bring millions upon millions of tourists to the city every year, but what’s it like to live there? Whether you’re into history, art, music, or basically anything else, the city offers incredible diversity in terms of lifestyle. The nightlife scene is booming, with countless establishments for you to try. Not just for party animals, Sydney has many family-friendly amenities, too. Every beach here is equipped with BBQs, bathrooms, showers, and anything else you could need for a day spent by the sea. Sports fans should also brush up on their rugby knowledge before moving to Sydney, as this is the most popular sport in Sydney.

Planning your move

You’ve done your homework and you have a pretty good idea of what you have to look forward to; now it’s time to start planning your next steps. Here’s a guide with our top tips when looking at the logistics of your interstate move from the Gold Coast to Sydney.

PACK BELONGINGS AND FURNITURE

Arguably the most stressful and tedious part of an interstate move is packing up your current home. The longer you’ve lived there, the more belongings you’ve probably acquired, and going through them can be a pain. While deciding what to let go of is up to you, our professional packing service can help with getting everything else boxed up and ready to transport.

If this is something you think you can take on yourself, then be sure to get the right moving boxes for your belongings, as well as protective wrapping to keep things safe in transit.

MOVING A CAR OR VEHICLE

The drive from Gold Coast to Sydney will take around nine hours, plus rest stops and food breaks. While this is definitely doable for some, you may want to preserve your energy for the moving-in phase of your interstate relocation. If this seems like a good idea to you, our vehicle relocation services could be the answer. Our experts will move your car from the Gold Coast to Sydney, taking that added strain away.

PREPARE YOUR PET

While moving is no doubt stressful for the people involved, it can also take a pretty big toll on family pets, too. Allied’s pet transportation experts will look after your furry friend, ensuring they have the smoothest and least-stressful experience possible. Once your pet has had a visit to the vet to make sure they’re in tip-top health to travel, they’ll be good to go!

CONSIDER STORAGE

Moving can be an overwhelming process, especially if you have a house-full of things to bring with you. If it’s all a bit much, you may want to consider putting some items into secure storage. This will give you time to settle in and see what you need in your new home. We have both long term storage and short term storage facilities, where your things will be kept safe and sound until you have a plan in place for them.
