Rugged landscapes, sandy beaches, and some pretty stunning views all await you following your move to Tasmania. But before you start planning your first outdoor adventure, there are a few practical things you should plan for first.

Financial planning is an important factor in any move, and your relocation to Tasmania is no different. When done properly, this will give you a good understanding of what you can expect from the cost of living in Tasmania, and will give you a baseline to align your expense expectations with.

Here at Allied, we provide reliable relocation services, so whether you’re planning an interstate move to Hobart or another part of the country, we'll be here to help. We have experts based all across the island, from our Devonport moving team to the Launceston removalists, so we can help you with a seamless relocation.

Salary

The main factor that will likely determine how affordable Tassie is for you is your salary. Here, the average annual income is around $80k, which is lower than other parts of Australia.

Salaries can vary a lot from job to job, so it’s a good idea to do some research into your profession or roles you would be interested in, and what they pay. For example, registered nurses earn, on average, $107k here, while personal trainers can make around $65k, and bank tellers might have a salary closer to $50k.

Housing

As is the case with almost any location, the cost of accommodation in Tassie depends on a lot of factors. Location, size, and amenities are some of the main ones, as well as whether you’re looking to rent your own place, take a room in a houseshare, or if you want to purchase a property.

Generally speaking, the West Coast is one of the cheapest places to live in Tasmania on account of being a more rural area, while the beachy East Coast is more costly. According to a Tenants Union of Tasmania report from March 2024, a two-bedroom rental in Greater Burnie can cost approximately $290 per week, while the same in Hobart City could set you back $495, making the cost of living in Hobart quite a bit higher than elsewhere.

Overall, rental prices around Australia have increased by up to 6% in the last year. Where you choose to live is entirely up to you, and if you want to experience life in Hobart, then you’ll need to set aside a bit more money for rent.

Transport

While rent in the city might be significantly more expensive than in rural areas, you’ll have the benefit of everything that comes with city living. This means more easily-accessible amenities and facilities, as well as better transport options. You don’t necessarily need to buy a car to get around Tasmania, as bus networks connect many Tasmanian towns and remote areas. If you do choose to drive, it’s worth noting that petrol costs here tend to be marginally higher than on the mainland.

The main form of public transport in Tasmania is the bus, called Metro, which operates in Hobart, Launceston, and Burnie. Getting a GreenCard for your journeys will save you money on fares, and it can also be used all around Tasmania.

Leisure

When you’re not working or travelling, and you want to get out of the house, Tassie has a lot to offer for your down-time. Nature lovers can take in the beauty that Tasmania has to offer without spending a dollar. There are endless walks, hikes, and nature-related activities for outdoor enthusiasts that are free. Get the most out of the summer sunshine from the top of a mountain, and remember to pack a jacket for adventures in the chillier winter weather!

If you’d rather spend a day-off at the movies, then a cinema ticket will cost you around $18 to $21, and you can avail of mid-week or concession offers to get more for your money. Gym memberships here, on average, range from $10 to $18 per week, making them marginally cheaper than other parts of the country.
